What Exit Velocity Measures

Exit velocity, sometimes called exit speed, is how fast the ball leaves the bat. Bat speed is the barrel coming into the ball, and exit speed is the velocity of the ball leaving it.

Both climb through adolescence as a baseball player adds strength and reps build efficient swing mechanics. A 14 year old and an 18 year old at the same percentile can still sit close to 20 mph apart.

Why the Testing Method Changes the Number

Tee work produces the highest and most repeatable readings because the ball is not moving. Front toss falls a few ticks below that, and live batting practice lands five to ten mph under a player's max exit velocity because the hitter is also solving timing and pitch speed. The same swing reads higher with an alloy or composite barrel than with wood, which is why college programs ask for wood numbers. Confirm the ball, the delivery, and the bat before trusting any exit velocity data.

How Much Players Gain Each Year

Most hitters add three to five mph per season through their teens, with the biggest jump between 14 and 15 during the growth spurt. Percentile work built on TrackMan velocity readings shows four to six mph between bands at a given age, so a hitter holding his position gains close to 20 mph across those four years.

Bat Speed and Rotational Power

Bat speed sets the ceiling for exit velocity. A faster-moving barrel transfers more energy into the ball at contact, which is why the hardest hitters in the game combine elite bat speed with efficient mechanics. Lower-body drive, core stability, and grip strength all play a role in creating that speed. For younger players, coordination and swing mechanics matter most, while strength training becomes a bigger factor as players mature around age 14 or 15.

Launch Angle and Swing Plane

Launch angle is the vertical angle of the ball as it leaves the bat, and it plays a major role in determining whether a hitter produces line drives, fly balls, or ground balls. For many power hitters, the productive range sits around 25 to 30 degrees, not the 45 degrees often repeated online. Because most pitches arrive on a downward path, a slightly upward swing plane helps hitters stay through the ball longer and make better contact.

A properly fitted bat can help a hitter maximize their exit velocity. What College Recruiters Look For

College recruiters use the metric as a filter because the number is measured, not estimated. Division I programs generally want 90 or better from position players, while Division II, Division III, and junior college rosters carry hitters in the low to mid 80s. Among MLB players, batted balls average near 90 mph, and the hardest contact clears 100. Statcast shows the payoff: balls hit 96 and above produce a batting average over .300, while 95 pulls it near .265. High exit velocity shows up later as a stronger OPS.

How to Measure and Raise Your Exit Velo

Tools and Testing

A pocket radar is one of the easiest ways to start measuring exit velocity and provides quick feedback during training.
